This suit feels very casual, but fun, particularly with the matching cropped flares. (It also comes with a longer A-line skirt, a vest, and a basic sheath (with pockets!).

The fabric is a “stretch tweed,” made from 67% viscose, 31% polyester, and 2% Elastane. All of the pieces are machine washable (but line dry).

I think it's really interesting how the different matching pieces change the vibe of the suit — the A-line midi skirt feels very Grown Up in the Room, whereas when the jacket is styled with the vest and jeans, it feels much more Cool Girl.

The jacket is $345, available in sizes 00-20; the matching pieces are $195-$295.

Looking for burgundy, wine or purple suits for women? This Boss suit in a purple “mulberry” looks lovely, as does this Reiss suit in berry, and M.M.LaFleur has a lot of “wine” options, as well as this pretty stretch tweed in lavender. On the more affordable side, this reader favorite suit under $75 is a winey red. For plus sizes, Estelle has a pretty suit in “ultraviolet.” On the lighter side, Banana Republic has suiting in a violet lavender.

Every year there are a few amazing BOSS suits in the big Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, and this year is no different. I love this pretty navy pant suit, with the slant pockets and asymmetric buttons. (I'm impressed by how nice it looks worn open, too, if you watch the video.)

The jacket is currently marked to $366, but will go back up to $545 after the sale ends. (It looks like all sizes 0-18 are in stock at the moment, too!) The matching pants are currently $199, but will go back to $298 after the sale. Other matching pieces include this dress, and this alternate jacket.

Other great suits in the sale include an olive suit from Theory (jacket, pants), and a greige suit from Boss (jacket, pants, skirt). If you want a plain black, I'd go for the one from Good American (jacket, pants). Another great find for more conservative looks: the L'Agence Angelina tweed jacket, which we've featured before — there's a pink and orange version in the sale.

This suit from The Fold is so lovely — and it's part of the big sale they have going on right now.

The pale pink multicolor tweed is so feminine and yet conservative, and the black and white edging just makes it all the more interesting.

The blazer was $765, but is now marked to $306; the matching skirt was $450 but is now $225 (and almost entirely sold out, alas). They have a lot of tweed pieces in the sale if this is your style, though!

So we (ok, I) talk a lot about how you can wear light blue suits the exact same way you would a light gray suit… but looking around this morning I realized that light gray suits maybe haven't been around a lot lately. (There are still buckets of light blue suits, of course.)

The first one that caught my eye was the basic Theory suiting in “light gray melange” over at Nordstrom — blazer, trousers, and cropped pants, all on pretty great discount — but despite my best efforts I couldn't find it pictured anywhere as a suit, only as separates.

Then, when I was hunting at Theory, I found the pretty pictured suit, which I think I like even more — the crosshatched canvas tweed is a much more interesting texture and, I think, makes both places far more interesting as separates.

I like it as styled, down to the loafers, although I'd probably recommend you wear a V-neck t-shirt beneath the blazer to a) allow you to take your blazer off during the day, and b) protect the blazer from your underarm area.

The blazer was $425, but is now marked to $255, with sizes 00-14 still available. Theory has a number of matching pieces (some of the dresses are very short on the models; know your office!), including a Chanel-like jacket, all in the same canvas tweed.

The pictured pants are were $325, and are now marked to $195. There are also matching trousers in the sale, as well, but I am sorry to report that they are “carpenter pants” with some too-odd-for-work details (IMHO).

You can also find some of the canvas tweed pieces at Bloomingdale's (where they also have the same basic gray suiting on sale that I was looking at at Nordstrom), as well as Saks, and a few pieces at Neiman Marcus as well.

(Also: Theory Outlet has a light gray melange suit in stretch wool, and if you happen to be searching for a “metallic silk twill” suit in ice gray, Theory has one of those on sale as well.)

I don't remember why I was at J.McLaughlin's website the other day, but this pretty “mid-blue” suit caught my eye. (They're showing it with a fun blue sweater with stripes the same color, and it's lovely.)

When I came back today, I was happy to see that it's on sale — the blazer was $398, but is now marked to $250, and the pants were $228, but are now marked to $149. But — now you can also take an extra 30% off sale styles, with the discount applied at checkout, so the blazer comes down to $175, and the pants come down to $105. Nice (but: final sale).

The pieces are available in sizes 0-14.
