A white t-shirt is a classic base for all kinds of work outfits... but it can be tricky to find one that's opaque, so we rounded up some new options.

One of the questions I often see readers asking and discussing is the hunt for the best non see-through white T-shirt, or opaque white T-shirts — and really, why is it so hard to find a T-shirt that isn't see-through? I thought I'd round up some of the best suggestions I've seen over the years…

{related: how to elevate a simple T-shirt}

What to Wear with White T-shirts for Work

First, what to wear with opaque white T-shirts for work: I definitely recommend wearing a nude-for-you T-shirt bra.

If you need to layer a camisole I'd probably go for a shade that best matches your skin tone in a slightly silky fabric so it doesn't cling to your T-shirt. (Years ago, we actually had a huge debate about whether you should wear a white camisole under a white top — I still kind of like a white camisole under a white blouse, but for a T-shirt I think a nude-for-you camisole would be better.)

Gap also has really solid options for bras and panties for a wide range of skin tones, as well!

Our Latest Favorite Opaque White T-Shirts for Work

Hunting for opaque white T-shirts for work? As of 2024, we'd suggest checking the double-layer lines from Boden, Express, Old Navy, and Hobbs, as well as great sources for basic Pima cotton such as L.L.Bean, Uniqlo, Everlane, Banana Republic, and Talbots. (This $268 tee also gets great reviews for opacity, and Elizabeth swears by this tee under $30!)

As of 2024, the best spots to check for nude-for-you undergarments are Gap, Old Navy, or Nubian Skin for tons of options — Victoria's Secret also has a bunch!

Let's take a closer look at some of our favorite non see-through white T-shirts…

1. Boden's Double Layer Line

opaque white tee with scoopneck and elbow-length sleeves; styled with yellow high-waisted pleated pants
Boden has many double-layer options…

Boden often has a bunch of great colors in their double layer line of tees, but obviously the extra layers are best with the lightest colors! They're available in sizes X-L for around $32-$45.

2. Express's Double Layer Line

opaque white V-neck tee
Express also has a ton of double-layered options!

Express's double-layer line varies — sometimes they have a lot of styles, sometimes they only have a few. Sizes range from XS to XL, and prices are usually around $34.

3. Hobbs Double Fronted Top

double-layered white top with deep V and elbow-length sleeves
Another great spot with double-fronted options: Hobbs!

The Aimee Double-Fronted Top from Hobbs is a stylish and versatile top that features a unique double-layered design. It is available in sizes 2-18, and the color option is ivory.

The top is made from a soft and comfortable blend of viscose and elastane, with a double-layered front that provides extra coverage and a flattering drape. The top has a round neckline, short sleeves, and a relaxed fit that is perfect for layering.

The top is $75 at Hobbs; you can also find the brand at Bloomingdale's as well.

4. Fisher's Finery

opaque white tee from Fishers Finery
Elizabeth swears by this tee under $30 from Fisher's Finery.

This top comes in a wide range of sizes, from XS to XXL, and is available in a variety of colors, including black, white, navy, pink, and more. The top features a classic fit with a flattering V-neckline and short sleeves, making it a versatile and comfortable option for everyday wear.

Elizabeth recently called this tee her “ride or die white tee” in a recent roundup of favorite low-cost clothing basics:

I don’t remember how I found out about the Fishers Finery brand, but now that it’s in my life, I’m never looking back.

This T-shirt is completely opaque, incredibly soft, and just slouchy enough to be comfortable without looking sloppy. The fabric is a viscose/cotton/spandex blend that washes beautifully and can go right in the dryer. I’ve worn it dozens of times and it still looks as good as it did the day I bought it. The price is usually under $30, but I would pay a lot more.

5. Lafayette New York 148

opaque white tee with scoopneck
This $268 tee from Lafayette 148 New York gets GREAT reviews for opacity!

{related: stylish tops for under suits}

This opaque white tee is on the higher end of the price point, but it's been around and highly reviewed for years! It's available in a range of sizes, from XS to XL, and features a flattering scoop neckline and short sleeves. It is made from a soft and breathable cotton material that is comfortable for everyday wear.

The top is available in several different colors, including white, black, and navy. Reviewers on the Nordstrom website praise the top for its high quality, versatility, and flattering fit. One reviewer notes that it is “perfect for layering” and that it “can be dressed up or down.” Another reviewer comments that it is “worth the investment” and that it “looks great with everything.”

The top also comes in plus sizes!

Other Options for Non See-Through White Tops for Work

Short-Sleeve Sweaters: Often More Opaque than Tees

Some of our favorite short-sleeved sweater tees for 2024 include Quince ($45!), Ann Taylor, J.Crew,* and this Amazon bestseller. (* plus sizes too!) If you're hunting for something fancier, check out Kule; Tuckernuck also has one in a cashmere/silk. As of 2024, Nordstrom and Anthropologie both have a huge selection of sweater tees. (All of the ones below come in white and black, as well as other colors!)

Other Women's T-Shirts for Work We Love

These T-shirts may be made of comfortable and durable materials and feature appropriate designs or colors that are appropriate for a workplace environment.

Looking for the best work-appropriate T-shirts? As of 2024, some of our favorite dressy T-shirts for work are from Amazon Essentials, Theory, Everlane, J.Crew, Banana Republic, Nic + Zoe, and Vince — also check our posts on opaque white tees and the best plus-size tees for work!

The Best Plus-Size T-Shirts for Work

In terms of opaque white tees, Boden (noted above) is available up to size 22, and the Lafayette 148 New York top does come in plus sizes. The Fisher's Finery tee is available up to size XXL but they note that it runs large. L.L. Bean is also a good bet for opacity since their supima cotton is known to be excellent.

Pictured above, some of the best plus-size tees for work as of 2024: one / two / three / four / five

Just hunting for a basic weekend tee? These are some of our favorites (there is some overlap, but in general they're looser and have more casual details such as pockets and shirttail hems…).

The Best Weekend Women's T-Shirts

As of 2024, some of the best weekend women's t-shirts include Caslon, Madewell, Amazon Essentials, Fishers Finery, New Day, Rag & Bone, Frame, Splendid, Michael Stars, Three Dots, James Perse, and Velvet.

Readers who like to wear white T-shirts to work: What is your favorite brand for non see-through white T-shirts? If you layer something underneath them, are you a fan of nude-for-you camisoles or white camisoles? (I'm normally on the team of “Your camisole should match whatever color your shirt is” but for an opaque white T-shirt I might go with nude-for-you.) What are your favorite ways to style a white tee for work?

woman works at office; she is wearing a silky blouse for work

Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

It used to be really hard to find anything but your basic silk button-front blouse, but it feels like great silk blouses for work are EVERYWHERE right now, so I thought we'd do a little roundup! If you're a fan of silk blouses, do you prefer button-fronts, pullover styles like T-shirts, or something else?

(We actually have an entire roundup of JUST silk button-front blouses, so this post is expanding that to talk about silk blouses in general.)

Do you have any great silk knits (or silk-blend knits)? What are your top tips for care for them, whether it's washable silk or the instructions say “dry clean“?

10 Great Silk Blouses for Work

The Best Silk Button-front Blouse: Everlane

blue silk button-front blouse
Best Silk Button-front Blouse: Everlane

Silk button-front blouses are a classic for a reason — they're effortlessly stylish and timeless. They also make great layering pieces underneath sweaters, cardigans, and blazers.

Our top pick here is Everlane — they've had great options for washable, eco-conscious silk for a long while now. The Clean Silk Relaxed Shirt currently comes in seven colors in sizes 00-16 for $150.

Other great options here for button-fronts include include Boden, M.M.LaFleur, Club Monaco, L'Agence, Equipment, and Vince.

On the more affordable side, there are a few direct-to-consumer brands that specialize in silk that will come up a few times throughout this piece; they all have options for your basic silk button-front blouse as well: Quince, Grana, and Lilysilk.

The Best Silk Popover Blouse: Kobi Halperin

Best Silk Popover Blouse: Kobi Halperin

Readers love a good popover blouse — no buttons, but all the polish. But there aren't a ton of silk popovers around right now! This one from Kobi Halperin at Nordstrom looks great and comes in a sleeveless version, too. I like that the blouse is stretch silk, also.

One reviewer noted that it's a nice quality, drapes well, and is elegant and casual — but it may run on the smaller size.

The long-sleeve blouse currently comes in five colors, for $298.

The Best Plus-Size Silk Blouses: Vince

plus-size professional woman wearing black silk blouse for work
Best Silk Blouses for Work for Plus Sizes: Vince

Hooboy, there are NOT a lot of options here! Vince consistently has both classic and trendy silk blouses for work available in regular AND plus sizes, so great job, Vince!

Other options: Eileen Fisher has a ton of silk basics for work, although the stock is somewhat patchy in plus sizes right now, and Spanx just came out with a “low maintenance” silk button-front that goes up to size 3X. Kind of off the beaten path, but super affordable: Etsy seller OlivaOceana makes customized silk blouses that look gorgeous, and she works up to size 5X. Speaking of customizable options, eShakti has a ton of silk options — you can buy up to size 6X off the rack, or give them custom measurements.

The Best Silk Blouse for Work to Splurge On: Bruno Cuccinelli

beigey pink silk blouse for work with fold trim details at shoulder
Best Silk Blouse to Splurge On: Bruno Cucinelli

Bruno Cucinelli's blouses don't just have interesting patterns — they often have additional details like the shoulder detailing on this $2,495 stunner. Expensive? For sure, but it's hard to find anything quite like it that's more affordable.

Other brands who regularly carry drool-worthy silk blouses include Akris, Lafayette 148 New York, and Etro (Etro also has absolutely gorgeous silk knits right now!).

The Best Short-Sleeve Silk Blouse: Amour Vert

green and white silk short-sleeved blouse
Best Silk Short-Sleeved Blouse: Amour Vert

Amour Vert's washable silk blouses have been reader favorites for a while, and they're also one of the most reliable places to look if you like a colorful print. They're $148 at Amour Vert, currently available in 10+ colors, sizes XXS-XL.

Another place to look for a lot of slightly interesting, generally short-sleeved silk blouses: Premium Outlets seems to have a ton of options online.

The Best Basic Silk Tee: Quince

pink silk t-shirt
Best Basic Silk Tee: Quince

For $49, this silk tee is hard to beat. I like that it's a little bit loose, and I like the detail of the keyhole at the back of the neck. It comes in 12 colors, sizes XS-XL, for $49.90.

This is one of the easiest styles to find elsewhere — you can check out Cuyana, Brooks Brothers, Grana, LilySilk, Ravella, M.M.LaFleur, and more (but $49 is one of the most affordable prices we've seen).

The Best Silk Knit Tee: J.Crew

silk blend sweater tee in navy
Best Knit Silk Tee: J.Crew

J.Crew has a silk-cashmere blend cropped T-shirt that is among its bestsellers right now. IMHO, a silk/cashmere or silk/cotton blend is the Holy Grail for tees — they wear like sweaters, are easy to care for (no ironing usually needed), but they're breathable and look a bit more polished than your regular sweater tee.

The J.Crew one is $98 full price but is currently marked to $54.50; it's available in 10 colors in sizes XXS-3X. Lilysilk also has a ribbed silk knit tee at the moment.

Not a tee, but worth mentioning: Brooks Brothers‘ silk/cashmere shawl collar sweater has been a reader favorite for YEARS — it's a great on its own or as a layering piece under sweaters.

The Best Sleeveless Silk Top: Elie Tahari

sleeveless silk blouse in navy
Best Sleeveless Silk Blouse for Work: Elie Tahari

The Judith blouse has been around for years, and it's always been among our favorite sleeveless tops for work. The contour necklnine and soft shoulder pleat are great details, and in all it makes for a polished outfit, whether by itself or layered under a cardigan, sweater jacket, or blazer.

The top is $198, but currently marked to $148, at Elie Tahari.

You can find much simpler tanks at all of the same places that have basic silk tees, as well

The Best Fancy Silk Blouses: M.M.LaFleur

purple silk blouse with dramatic cowlneck
Best Fancy Silk Blouses: M.M.LaFleur

M.M.LaFleur has a NUMBER of really cute silk blouses right now, from the cowl-neck pictured above to a bunch of other fun prints and styles, from basic ones to more interesting ones. (They even have a big selection of silk jersey, huzzah!)

Club Monaco also has a surprising number of silk items right now that are more interesting than the usual fare, but a lot of them are low stock at the moment. Elie Tahari is another great spot with interesting silk blouses.

Best Silk Camisole: Quince

strappy black silk camisole
The Best Silk Camisole: Quince

Know your office before wearing a silk camisole without another layer on top to work — those skinny spaghetti straps are great for date night, but in years past have been widely thought to be unprofessional.

But if you're on the hunt, my pick would be Quince's $39 camisole — it comes in a ton of colors, is washable and stretchy, and would make a great underlayer (like a proper camisole) or a cute going-out top. Grana also has a nice selection.

Looking for something more splurgey? This Cinq à Sept one comes in a bunch of colors and has great reviews.

We often do roundups of basic neutrals -- so I thought I'd do a roundup of some of my favorite brands for blouses in pretty prints. Which brands are your favorites for prints?

collage of 5 women wearing blouses in pretty prints

Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

We've done a ton of roundups of super-basic solid blouses (both silky and crisp) — wardrobe essentials if you like the look.

Personally, though, I tend to either be someone who wears all black, or multiple colors at once. Blouses with fun prints can be an easy way to get this look because you can pick out a color from within the print to match, and then add a third piece in that color (e.g., blazer, pants, sweater).

We've never done a roundup of where to get blouses in fun prints, though, so I thought we'd go on a hunt… especially since so many workwear stores specialize in solids (and neutral solids at that!).

Readers, if you're going to splurge on blouses, would you prefer a solid or a print? What are your favorite prints — and which blouses and tops in your closet right now are favorites for work?

Where to Find Blouses in Pretty Prints

pretty blouse from Halogen with abstract blue print and black mesh raw edge

Halogen blouses have been reader favorites for years because they're so affordable and come in a number of fun prints. This sleeveless blouse has a bunch of great colors at the moment, including this fun blue abstract one, pictured; they're priced at $19-$49 and come in sizes XXS-XXL and plus sizes.

Other super affordable options include NYDJ (this blouse is a longstanding reader favorite, available in regular and plus sizes) and Kut from the Kloth (this blouse is a solid option).

(In general, though, I tend to think of prints as being the dividing line between a budget blouse and a much pricier one. The lower priced options often have odd fabric alignments where the pattern doesn't quite match up, or a wide range of patterns that might be cool or might be tragic.)

blouse in pretty print from Ann Taylor, popover blouse with bluish lavender with green details

Ann Taylor is another great option for blouses in pretty prints. The popover pictured above is a reader favorite and often comes in a ton of great prints and colors, but they also have knits, sleeveless cowlnecks, and more in a bunch of great prints. The blouse above is $64.50 full price.

Note that sister site Loft is another great source for affordable blouses in fun prints! At this price point, also, do note that The Kit, a sustainable brand from Project Runway alum Daniel Vosovic, specializes in digital prints. (They don't make garments until a customer places an order, so there is almost no waste.)

blouse in pretty print from L'Amour Vert, washable silk popover in black with blue abstract blocks on it

Amour Vert has been on our radar for a while now as a smaller brand with great sustainability practices, as well as lovely washable silk blouses. This short-sleeved popover is one of their washable silk options, with nine different colorways available right now in sizes XXS-XL.

At full price they're $148, but there are some marked as low as $66 right now.

blouse in pretty print from Tucker NYC, silky turtleneck blouse with blue and black abstract print on it

Tucker has long been one of my favorites for gorgeous prints. The pictured blouse is one of their bestsellers, and they note that the silk blouse has a smocked, mock-neck collar with a two-button closure at the back. There are currently 16 colorways (including basic white) in sizes XXS-2X for $275. (The blouse is 92% silk, 8% spandex, dry clean only, alas.)

blouse in pretty print from Equipment, purple paisley with white cuffs, collar, and placket

No roundup of blouses with fun prints would be complete without two specific mentions, both around the same price point: Equipment NYC (pictured above) and Diane von Furstenberg. Both have been around for years, with a ton of gorgeous prints each year.

(Another reliable source in this price point: this L'Agence blouse, for $380.)

The pictured blouse — a purple paisley with white details at the cuffs, placket and collar — is $350 at Nordstrom.

blouse in pretty print from AKris, pixelated colorblocked option with short sleeves and zippered neck

There are, obviously, several tiers above this for silk blouses, and I'd love to hear which brands you truly drool over for prints. Akris tends to be one of the brands I haunt and keep checking for sales — they've particularly had some gorgeous prints in blue in recent years, which, if you can't tell from this post, is one of my favorite colors.

The dolman-sleeve blouse is “an extremely zoomed in view of flowers” (huh! we posted a suit in the same pattern a few weeks ago and the description did not note that!); the neckline has a zipper. The blouse is $995 at Nordstrom.

Where To Find Great Basic Blouses

We've rounded up some blouses in pretty prints above, but if you'd prefer solid colors, here are some of our favorites in each category. (Neutrals are pictured, but many of these blouses come in 10+ colors.)

The Best Popovers for Work

Readers often note that they love popovers the best — no fussing with buttons or gaping or collars that don't lie flat. Here are some of our favorites:

collage of 4 women wearing white popover blouses (no buttons)
As of 2024, some reader favorites for popover blouses include 1) Ann Taylor, 2) Vince Camuto 3) CeCe, 4) Amazon/Milumia. Not pictured, but keep an eye out at Talbots, J.Crew, and J.Crew Factory also. Other bestsellers include Amazon sellers CEASIKARY and roswear. Looking for silk? Try this one from Kobi Halperin.

Classic Button-Front Blouses

These are classics for a reason. If these aren't your favorite, you may want to check out our post on fake collars for work outfits (to get the layered look without fussing with an actual button-front shirt), or move on to silky blouses or popover blouses (both below)…

collage of 5 women wearing crisp button-front collared shirts
Pictured above, the best women's collared blouses as of 2024: one / two* / three* / four / five (* = available in plus sizes; see more in our roundup of the best plus-size workwear blouses — also check out our DIY options for gaping blouses)

The Best Silky Button-Front Blouses for Work

These can be even better for layering looks because they're silky — but it can also make lunchtime feel a bit fraught with danger. Who among us hasn't gotten a salad dressing stain on silk at least once?

collage of 5 women wearing silky blouses
Pictured above, some of our favorite brands for silk button-front blouses as of 2024: 1) Quince ($59!) 2) Boden 3) Everlane* 4) MM.LaFleur* and 5) Club Monaco. For more affordable options check Grana and Lilysilk; for fancier options check L'Agence, Equipment, and Vince.

Each generation seems to discover these anew... so I thought I'd round up some great fake collars (aka dickies.)

The post The Hunt: Fake Collars for Layered Work Outfits (aka Dickies) appeared first on Corporette.com.

3 women wear fake collars, aka dickies, beneath sweaters for a layered work outfit

If you're trying to look more polished, one of the classic looks is the layered look for sweaters. It seems like a simple idea in theory — button-front shirt + sweater, BOOM, right? But then you run into problems with static cling and bulk.

One of the classic ways to solve this problem is with the humble fake collar, aka the dickie. (Sometimes also spelled dickey!) Each generation seems to discover these anew, so I thought I'd round up a few that are out there right now.

What Are Dickies?

If you are unfamiliar with dickies, these are what can best be described as fake collars — they are more than a clip-on collar, but not the full shirt. In general, they have a partial shoulder and usually some type of elastic strap “sleeve” to keep the whole thing anchored to your chest and lying neatly.

(As we are in the age of crop tops, do not be confused – these are not crop tops. Do not wear them by themselves. Especially not to work, but, really, I'd recommend against it anywhere; a dickie is never going to look as cool as an actual backless shirt.)

What Are the Benefits to Wearing Dickies Instead of Shirts?

There are actually a number of benefits to wearing dickies or fake collars with work outfits. They're a lot less bulky than blouses, for example, and they're far easier to get things to lay properly. Because you're unlikely to be spilling food on the fake collar or sweating on it (although it depends on the specific dickie), you can get away with dry cleaning them less.

Cost is another big benefit — everything in this Hunt is under $100.

They also fit no matter what size you are, generally — and you can even keep them at the office if you want to instantly make your outfit feel more polished.

Can You Wear Dickies Under Sweaters for that Preppy Look?

If you want that preppy layered look with a collar, cuffs, or shirttail hanging out beneath a sweater, this is absolutely the way to go — other options would include buying a twofer sweater or a silky button-front blouse

If you want to wear an easily washed shirt under a sweater so that your sweater needs less laundering, any of the cotton or jersey sweaters below will work great (especially the ones at the top of this post!).

A Final Note on Finding Dickies for Work Outfits

I will note that this was quite a Hunt because, haha, everyone hates the term dickie. Which, hey, 1000%. But hunting for “collar” on websites is… less than helpful. (If you try to go this route, make sure you don't end up buying an actual dog collar. Sigh.)

Pictured on home page but not below: this frilly fake collar from Etsy (with matching cuffs!).

Our Latest Favorite Fake Collars for Work Outfits

Hunting for great fake collars for layered work outfits? As of Jan. 2024, Amazon has a zillion options for fake shirt collars as well as faux turtlenecks; also check out Etsy sellers Putney Home Design, bloominglace as well as others. On the fancy side of things, it's hard to beat Lele Sadoughi's faux collars. (Amazon also has a number of twofer sweaters, with that layered look built in!)

(Of course, if you're looking for a dickey to layer with a blazer, Veronica Beard makes the blazers and the dickeys — Quince also has zippered inserts for blazers.

Some Great Fake Collars for Layered Work Outfits

The Super Affordable, Crisp Fake Collar: Amazon

woman wears fake collar, aka dickey, beneath sweater for a layered work outfit -- this dickey is a classic crisp white

If you're looking for a crisp collar, Amazon is one of the easiest places to find one — there are a ton of sellers with shirts in basic white and pastels, as well as plaid options, faux jeweled options, and more.

(You can also find faux turtlenecks!)

The pictured one is from seller Tatuo; you can get a two-pair in either size medium or large for under $16.

Feminine Fake Collars for Layered Work Outfits: Etsy

woman wears fake collar, aka dickey, beneath sweater for a layered work outfit -- this dickey is a lacy option with sleeves

I'm sure you will be shocked to hear that Etsy has a ton of great options for fake collars, all for really affordable prices.

I'm picturing this lacy one with sleeves just to show that they do sometimes come with sleeves — this one notes in the description that it could be worn under a dress; I also like the look of the collar matching the cuffs. (Such as, for example, this frilly collar with matching cuffs (pictured on our home page), although you have to hunt a bit to find the matching cuffs.) (The Etsy seller here, bloominglace, seems to specialize in these kinds of collars — ooh, and she has cuffs available separately.)

I'm in love with this crisp multi-collar look, this frilly one, and this artsy one, all under $20. The pictured one above is $15.99.

Faux Collars for Creative Work Outfits: Anthropologie

woman wears fake collar, aka dickey, beneath sweater for a layered work outfit -- this dickey is a slightly sheer black/white option with a high, almost Mandarin-like collar

They're not really selling this one with the photo, now, are they? Still: Anthropologie has a few “collar bibs,” as they call them, and they're all on sale for $30 right now.

I'm in love with this black and white option — although here she's wearing it on top of a shirt (?), if it were tucked in beneath a sweater as it should be it would be really cool, I think.

Victorian Fake Collars for Layered Look Outfits: Lele Sadoughi

woman wears fake collar, aka dickey, beneath sweater for a layered work outfit -- this dickey is a beige ruffly Victorian-inspired turtleneck look

The Victorian-inspired, lacy collar above is from Lele Sadoughi — she has a bunch of cute, ultra-twee collars with lace and pearls and gems, most under $100. You can find them at stores like Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus, and of course her own website.

More Dickies for Layered Work Outfits

woman wears fake collar, aka dickey, beneath sweater for a layered work outfit -- this dickey is a knit bright green

Admittedly, everything else in the roundup is a bit buttoned-up and kind of girly — so I thought I'd include this interesting cashmere dickey in fun colors from Guest in Residence. I think the colors are really fun, although I think I might be bothered if the knit of the dickey contrasted with the knit of the sweater I was pairing it with. But maybe that's just me.

(If you, like me, were unfamiliar with Guest in Residence: it is a “direct-to-consumer cashmere brand founded in New York by Gigi Hadid, who serves as creative director.”)

The pictured dickie is $95, and also comes in a taupe/lime combo.

Readers, do you like faux collars if you're going for a layered look for sweaters? Where have you found great fake collars for layered work outfits?

Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

I've been busy in the background updating some of our top picks for stylish blouses for work for our Wardrobe Essentials for Work page — I also thought I'd do a mini-hunt for seasonal prints and of-the-moment blouses. Below you'll find our top picks for popovers, blousy t-shirts, sleeveless shells, silky button-front blouses, and crisp button-front blouses — they're all pictured in white but they all generally come in at least black as well as other basic colors, often just solids. Minor note: there are SO MANY SILK BLOUSES out there at the moment — perhaps we'll do a post on how to take care of them at home, since so many are washable.

(I love all of the ones above; if you do also then act fast since (unlike the other picks in white) these are likely to be unavailable for sale within a month or two.)

Meanwhile, some of our top picks for seasonal blouses are above — which are your favorite blouses at the moment, readers? What styles and fabrics do you like best? What stores and brands do you trust the most for stylish blouses for work?

Pictured on square image on home page: gray & blue / white / rosy pink

A few quick notes on the stylish blouses for work pictured above:

  • Ann Taylor – This mixed-media top is a reader favorite and comes in a ton of different prints as well as solids. It's $59, but today there's a sale for 40% off. It's available in regular and petite sizes XXS-XXL. (We featured two other prints in our most-bought roundup for February.)
  • Chaus – I haven't featured anything from this brand in SO LONG but they have some really cute tops out there right now. This particular top is $49, available in 7 colors or prints in sizes XS-XL. It's polyester, so it's machine wash/tumble dry.
  • Boden – This is a jersey top that I'm totally squeeing over. It's $85, comes in 4 colors, petite and regular sizes 2-22.
  • L'Amour Vert – There are 10 lovely prints available in this sustainable, washable silk blouse. They're $148 and come in sizes XXS-XL. (They have a ton of sustainable workwear, actually!)
  • L'Agence – At the moment this brand would be among my top picks for droolworthy, stylish blouses for work — they have a ton of silk options, many in solid colors as well as fun prints. The pictured top is $380, available in sizes XS-M at Nordstrom; you can find it in more sizes (up to XXL) at L'Agence's website.

Hunting in general for blouses in pretty prints? As of 2024, some of the reader favorite brands include L'Agence, L'Amour Vert, Equipment, Smythe, and Tucker NYC. On the more affordable side, check out NYDJ,* Halogen*, Loft,* and Kut from the Kloth. For plus sizes, check out Catherine Gee (and the asterisks)!

The Best Popover Blouses for Work

These can be great if you want something that's easy care and doesn't have gaping problems — these also often look great untucked. Note that all of these pictured come in a TON of colors and seasonal prints.

The Best Blousy T-Shirts for Work

Blousy t-shirts can be great for work — they feel just a bit more polished than a t-shirt, but are as easy to throw on with almost any work outfit.

As of 2024, some of our favorite blousy tees for work in general include those from CeCe, Halogen, Vince Camuto, and Amazon seller Milumia. For silk options check Quince and Cuyana.

The Best Sleeveless Tops for Work

Know your office before you wear these without a cardigan or other topper — bare arms are still against some office dress codes (yes, even now). My $.02: no matter what, spaghetti straps are highly suspect if you want to take your cardi/blazer off at work unless your office is super casual.

The Best Silky Blouses for Work

Pictured above, some of our favorite brands for silk button-front blouses as of 2024: 1) Quince ($59!) 2) Boden 3) Everlane* 4) MM.LaFleur* and 5) Club Monaco. For more affordable options check Grana and Lilysilk; for fancier options check L'Agence, Equipment, and Vince.

The Best Crisp Button-Fronts for Work

Group of plus size women

Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

A ton of our Plus-Size Hall of Fame items are blouses, but I don't think we've done a roundup — so here is a quick rundown of the best plus-size workwear blouses!

In the past we've talked about important issues such as how to keep white blouses white, some DIY options for gaping blouses, when to tuck your blouse, whether the collar goes out or in, what color camisole to wear beneath a white blouse, and 10 things to know about wearing button-front blouses. We've also rounded up the best blouses for women with large breasts, if this is your issue!

Some of the Hall of Famers we've noted over the years include:

Image of 5 plus-size women wearing 1) a crisp popover blouse with collar 2) a crisp button-front blouse with 3/4 sleeves 3) a silky button-front dress with a notched V-neck but no collar, 4) a silky popover blouse with a V-neck, and 5) a crisp popover blouse with a collar
Pictured, some of the best plus-size workwear blouses as of 2022: one / two / three / four / five (you may also want to check out our roundup of dress shirts for women with large breasts)

Best Plus-Size Tees for Work

These are great layering pieces if you're having a more casual day…

Best Sleeveless Shells

These are some of our favorite sleeveless work tops in plus sizes: black / blue / white / pink — also check out this collared top and this camisole (but know your office before wearing without a blazer or sweater)!

A Closer Look at some of Our Favorite Plus-Size Blouses

While we've pictured some of our favorite washable jersey tees above (and a great layering option for a more casual day!), “the blousy tee” is always a nice option for less casual days. It's a bit silkier/fancier than a jersey T-shirt but without the gaping/ironing problems of a collared shirt. The Lands' End one above comes in a zillion colors; this similar style is great. (Lands' End in general is a great brand for this kind of style.)

Other brands to keep an eye on for these elevated T-shirt blouses include  Vince CamutoHalogenTalbots, Boden (up to 20/22) and Ravella (up to 20/22). (ModCloth and Old Navy also have some good options sometimes!)

The NYDJ popover blouse has been a reader favorite and bestseller for a zillion years now — it's machine washable and comes in a zillion colors and sizes at Nordstrom and Amazon. It can be a little bit on the more casual side, but it's a great option to wear by itself.

Vince Camuto makes some similar items — their rumple satin option is particularly popular.

If you're looking for a crisp, collared blouse for women in plus sizes, Universal Standard's Elbe blouse is a nice option that's been around for years now, available in sizes 00–40. I particularly like that it's essentially a popover — the placket only goes halfway down, which means you don't need to worry about gaping buttons on your tummy.

Some other nice options for plus-size collared shirts for women include non-iron options like Foxcroft, Ralph Lauren, Talbots, and Lands’ End.

If you want a sleek, tucked-in look (GREAT with voluminous pants or a flared skirt), bodysuits are back in style and can be a really sophisticated option.

They tend to be on the trendier side, so specific items will come and go, but good spots to check include Eloquii (pictured above), as well as J.Crew Factory,  MadewellASOS, and Venus. (You may also want to check out our whole post on the best bodysuits for work outfits.)
