It was, however, the final conversation when the hiring manager made a verbal offer, so I felt comfortable asking at that stage. I asked about both work life balance and then rather directly how many hours a week it would likely average during the year. Phrased it something like, “with all the interesting projects this group is working on, I’m so impressed that you get it all done with a small team of three. Is there ever a time when it feels overwhelming? Can you tell me about the work life balance with this role and with the team?”

I am also an attorney. I probably wouldn’t do it at the first interview but I have always point blank say something along the lines of “I know that you can’t ask me these questions so I am going to tell you. I have sole custody of two school aged children. With planning and notice I can be anywhere at anytime but every week there is something that I need to attend. It isn’t in either of our best interests for me to take this job and it not work out so I want us to have a conversation about expectations now.”

No one has never not hired me (but some have definitely misrepresented).

I’m currently interviewing for an in-house job after being in biglaw for 12 years. These are the questions I should have asked when I had my initial interview with the person who’d be my supervisor last week. I have a group interview with my potential in-house clients later this week and will definitely try to get a follow up conversation with the supervisor where I can ask these types of questions. But this post is definitely giving me food for thought.
