Comment on Teaching Writing to Secondary Students is Hard, But It’s Necessary by Tamara Thompson-Williamson https://theeducatorsroom.com/teaching-writing/#comment-185262 Tue, 16 Jul 2024 16:49:04 +0000 https://theeducatorsroom.com/?p=42571#comment-185262 Thank you for sharing your insightful reflections on teaching writing and I am sure that your journey resonates deeply with other educators who face similar challenges. As teachers, it is important to acknowledge the the challenges in trying to close the gaps in students writing skills and it is crucial to do so to ensure that they are able to function not just for academic purposes as they move up the grades but for personal growth as well. Many high- performing students are often good at finding the ‘right answer’ but struggles to articulate their thoughts in writing. As teachers, being able to identify this struggle is necessary if students are to grow, and as such, I applaud you for doing so with your student (s) and took steps to address it.
As we grow in the career, we understand the importance of integrating both implicit and explicit approaches to teaching and recognizing when to use what approach shows growth a teacher. Many of us have done away with the explicit approach to teaching, but students need to understand the mechanics, context, and process of writing. These are foundational skills that will make the difference in how students are able to communicate their ideas. Moreover, as teachers it is important to create a culture for writing, where writing is valued, which is important to students holistic growth. Feedback, presenting different genres and writing activities through different modes also allow students to develop their writing craft. As we explore, and dissect the many avenues to improve students writing and learning on a whole, we come to understand that the art of teaching is not a ‘one cap fits all’ mentality, but requires in depth understanding of the students we are instructing and the using the many tools available to us impart understanding to these students.

Comment on Why Teachers Need A Summer Break by Andrew Fergusson https://theeducatorsroom.com/why-teachers-need-a-summer-break/#comment-184058 Sat, 22 Jun 2024 14:26:27 +0000 https://theeducatorsroom.com/?p=35119#comment-184058 I seriously don’t even want to hear it that you require the summer off. You are home by 4 o’clock every day. You are off every weekend and every holiday with the summer, winter and spring break. What about firefighters? What about oil rig workers? What about air traffic controllers? What about farmers? I am so sick and tired of hearing that teachers somehow deserve or require the time off. Let’s just be straightforward here and say it is part of the deal that teachers get every summer off. It is the way the school year is structured. Perhaps teachers should just recognize that and express their gratitude and be grateful for the time off instead of acting like it is necessary. I am grateful for the incredible and difficult work that teachers do. The way that some teachers focus on how their summer time off is required and necessary, does not provide the sense that they are grateful for others such as firefighters.

Comment on The Life of a Theatre Teacher: Twelve Jobs in One by Rebi https://theeducatorsroom.com/the-life-of-a-theatre-teacher-twelve-jobs-in-one/#comment-183379 Wed, 12 Jun 2024 19:18:38 +0000 https://theeducatorsroom.com/?p=34136#comment-183379 I had to raise the money for our department, too. We were given no funds so every year I had to raise the money for each production. Each production cost over $10,000 and I had to raise that in addition to the 12 jobs.

Comment on Could AI Finally Kill Homework? by Allyn Wall https://theeducatorsroom.com/could-artificial-intelligence-kill-homework-ai-chatgpt-learning/#comment-182368 Mon, 20 May 2024 15:19:39 +0000 https://theeducatorsroom.com/?p=42311#comment-182368 wholeheartedly agree with the points raised in this article. As a high school math teacher transitioning into a role focused on educational technology, I am passionate about harnessing AI to enhance learning rather than simply using it as a shortcut for assignments. It’s crucial that we teach students how to use AI tools ethically and effectively to complement their learning. AI can revolutionize education by offering personalized feedback, improving time management, and fostering critical thinking skills. We must guide students to use AI to deepen their understanding and apply knowledge creatively, ensuring that technology serves as a powerful aid in their educational journey.

Oh? So a whole class of 6th grade boys making a cruise ship horn and waving their hands in front of their noses like something stinks every time I walk near them is just growing pains? What about how your “troubled children” SCREAMS in our faces when we ask them to stop talking? Simple mistakes? How about a boy calling me “crip” because I walk with a cane? Many of you parents-of-the-year are the problem.

Comment on It’s Time to Address Teacher Bias Against Special Education Students by Troy https://theeducatorsroom.com/time-address-teacher-bias-special-education-students/#comment-180640 Mon, 15 Apr 2024 00:38:33 +0000 http://theeducatorsroom.com/?p=27819#comment-180640 “Wow” was a frequent word I used throughout this entire article. It w almost asif they were in search of the worst teachers in the world to interview and gather information on. As soon as the article said that teachers who don’t think students who are on Tier 3 deserve any acknowledgement for their success I immediately became somehwat confused. How a teacher could think that rewarding a student with disabilities with the same recognition as other students is beyond me. I have been at a mod/sever site where the students simply go through their age appropriate grade and graduate accordingly. their presence and effort alone is plenty for us to hold a graduation ceremony and acknowledge their hard work and willingness to be teachable and have the school xperience that every child deserves.
